ABSTRACT

Human resource management (HRM) is conceived as having a wider scope than personnel management and Personnel management is only one element of HRM. HRM in Organizations Other than Large Private-Sector Companies has to realize that organizations are characterized by certain peculiarities that could slow down or even impede the adoption of modern HRM approaches. For one thing, Polish small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), not unlike small businesses elsewhere, often face financial difficulties and their owners sometimes lack managerial competence. This chapter has framed the discussion around review of the HRM literature, at the same time placing it in a wider context of the Eastern European systemic transformation. In the light of findings and evidence from earlier studies, it is fair to say that Polish organizations made progress albeit of non-uniform character in the domain of HRM. The chapter as noted in the introductory part is far wider and, among other things, bears upon the issue of corporate social responsibility (CSR).
