Worldbuilding is a term often associated with science fi ction and fantasy settings, where writers literally must decide the history and geography of entirely fi ctional worlds. But in a broader sense, all writers must engage in worldbuilding, detailing the unique setting where their story takes place. Story centric or light on story, games of all genres take place in a world, including action-adventure games, FPSs, RPGs, RTSs, 1 text-based adventures, mobile games, indie games, platformers, hidden-object games, and social games. Along with creating settings and determining the world’s scope, a narrative designer’s worldbuilding infl uences art design and sound design by suggesting what the game should look and sound like.
