ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the 'everyday ethics' of youth work and provides an overview of some of the ethical codes of conduct that are designed to ensure ethical practice. The chapter examines the reader to consider how to develop dialogue in a placement or workplace context. It deals with ethical awareness and reflection that one consider to be vital to being an ethical practitioner. Ethical codes are statements written or expressed by organisations or professional bodies that seek to safeguard service users and the reputation of the profession, and to guide the work of practitioners. The National Youth Agency statement of ethical conduct in youth s has a commitment to treat young people with respect, valuing each individual and avoiding negative discrimination. The Institute for Youth Work recognises the diversity of the youth work sector, which includes those that work unpaid and paid in local authority, voluntary, faith- based and community groups.
