ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the role of leadership theories in braver leadership coaching. It highlights the way in which leaders have traditionally been developed through management and executive education where as the focus is on leadership theory and the development of specific leadership skills and competences. The chapter evaluates six leadership theories such as transformational leadership, authentic leadership, ethical leadership, situational leadership, servant leadership and relational leadership theories. Traditionally leaders have relied on leadership education or executive development programs that tend to focus on the behaviors and traits of the individual. Van Dierendonck explained how in recent years leadership studies have shifted away from the focus on transformational leadership towards a greater emphasis on shared, relational, and global perspectives where especially the interaction between leader and follower are key elements. The consideration of bravery as a common element or catalyst encourages a broader reflection of what other leadership ideas and approaches might be applicable in any given situation.
