ABSTRACT

Bringing Local and Regional Development to a close, this chapter integrates and reinforces the main arguments. First, it provides a summary of the key contributions of the book. Second, the limits of local and regional development are considered. Third, in answer to the central question of “what kind of local and regional development and for whom?”, an outline of forms of development locally and regionally that are holistic, progressive and sustainable in their aims, principles, values and content is given. Lastly, the politics of local and regional development are discussed, including the potential, pitfalls and preconditions for innovative, new and broader understandings and practices internationally.
