ABSTRACT

This chapter considers integrated approaches to Local and Regional Development in Practice. Bordering Scotland in the UK, North East England can stake a credible claim to be the world's first industrial region. Weaknesses in regional industrial performance were evident by the end of the nineteenth century. Following the global financial crisis and amidst the Great Recession, the emergence of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat Coalition government in the wake of the general election in 2010 heralded a period of radical change. Boston metro region is distinctive in its particular development history, marked by recurrent episodes of crisis and an enduring capacity for reinvention and renaissance. The global financial crisis and Great Recession from the late 2000s presaged another episode of reinvention, although Boston metro demonstrated resilience in withstanding the worst of the crisis and maintaining its hub position as a centre of knowledge production.
