ABSTRACT

This chapter explains Markham Middle School (MMS) as Jay Denton is beginning his last few years before retirement. Jay is not waiting until his last year at MMS to plan for sustaining teacher leading and learning. Jay has provided support, but having Yolanda's guidance and support has been invaluable to Theresa's success. Although Jay's vision for a professional learning community was the structure for teacher collaboration, he had a purpose greater than merely bringing teachers together. As teacher learning and leading emerges and increases throughout the school, the responsibility of intentional leadership permeates all levels of the organization. The purpose of building relationships and distributing power and authority was primarily to establish a school culture in which teachers learned continuously. Looking ahead, Jay must give careful consideration to ways in which the great strides in aligning teacher leadership with teachers' professional development can be sustained.
