ABSTRACT

Whichever area in design and technology you are working in, your priority is to ensure

that everyone in your classroom is safe and free from harm. There are no other rooms in

schools that have so many potential hazards: in a design and technology workshop there

are tools, machinery, hot solder, chemicals, materials and dust; in the food room there

are knives, equipment, heat, boiling water; in textiles there are knives, machines, hot wax

— and put these together with a room full of pupils and the possibilities for accidents are

evident. So it is of the utmost importance that you know your room, and the potential

dangers within it very well, and plan and teach in such a way to minimise these.
