ABSTRACT

The philosophy and ethos of the school system in which we teach tends to be shaped by a

statement of aims and values. Examining the aims and values as stated in the aspirations of

several countries from the UK and beyond highlights similarities: the importance of working

towards sustainable futures, social justice and equitable societies and developing successful

learners, effective contributors, responsible citizens and confident individuals. There seems

to be some consensus that the values underpinning the systems and curriculum of schooling

should relate to:

• society, individuals capable of spiritual, moral, social, intellectual and physical growth and development, with consideration of community, culture and heritage and respect

for others

• economic needs and development • the environment.
