ABSTRACT

This chapter gives information for the purpose of academic writing, which might include: to present a hypothesis for consideration by others, to make notes on something read or heard. Various possibilities in academic writing: semi-formal vocabulary, lack of idioms and use of citation/references, use of both passive and active. The chapter evaluates common types of academic writing. It also gives the information for critical thinking; it varies from student to student, which is the nature of the critical approach. The chapter evaluates types of text in textbook, website, journal article, official report, newspaper or magazine article and e-book. It explains the format of academic writing and gives various examples for academic texts, which includes formal vocabulary, use of citation, impersonal style, long and complex sentences. The chapter also talks about brainstorming.
