ABSTRACT

Communication is around 20 per cent verbal and 80 per cent body language. Add to that the ability to understand the intention of the speaker, or being able to 'read between the lines', and we begin to understand the level of skill required to communicate. Cognition is the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience and the senses. Cognitive processing is a much bigger challenge for pupils with Asperger Syndrome (AS) than we appreciate. Neuro Typical (NT) brains can hold information that is not required at that moment but which they will need later during the task. The brain of someone with AS will not have a full tray of ingredients; they will have forgotten to put them all out or not even realize something is needed; or they may put the ingredients together out of sequence as set out in the recipe.
