ABSTRACT

School trips are great opportunities to expand life experiences and to develop life skills. Good organization and planning is the key to any successful school trip and if pupils with Asperger Syndrome (AS) are in the group, they will need to be carefully organized too. Anxiety will be the overwhelming emotion, the fear of the unknown and the lack of control. The level of differentiation depends on how competent and/or how anxious the pupil is. The main thing is to ensure that the pupil with AS feels safe and knows what to expect. The level of scaffolding may be reduced after negotiation if you feel the pupil is managing the trip well. The pupil's family may have tried and tested travel routines and be able to give advice on any potential difficulties. Wherever possible, apply routines already used by parents and keep everything as predictable as possible.
