ABSTRACT

Practical preparation for transition takes place in the summer before September entry. This is vital for the pupil with Asperger syndrome (AS) who may struggle to make sense of the world they live in: it is a very frightening place. A change in routine and feeling of helplessness, not being able to control what is happening, might cause meltdown. Children with AS are resistant to change because they are anxious and scared of the unknown: they want to do well but don't know what is expected of them. They cannot predict what's going to happen next and they may lack cognitive empathy and have difficulty imagining what we are thinking. Putting a poster with photographs of all pupils with an Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) in the staffroom will help staffs who do not teach them to recognize them around the school and in the playground.
