ABSTRACT
Stranger rape is generally seen as having the greatest resonance with the ‘real rape’ stereotype, which feminist activists and researchers have spent much time and energy dismantling. Many feminist commentators have criticized the ‘real rape stereotype’, in which rapes that fall outside a narrow narrative (e.g. an ‘innocent’ victim, taken by surprise, who had neither been drinking nor taking drugs, is dressed modestly, has not been raped before and is generally seen as an ‘upstanding’ member of the community) are seen as something ‘other than rape’.
