ABSTRACT

Although a much debated topic for several decades in the USA and Canada, higher education establishments in the UK have been slow to recognize and act on violence and abuse on campus. This chapter sets out the available evidence – drawing heavily on the findings from the National Union of Students’ (2010) Hidden Marks survey, and also Phipps and Young's (2012) work on ‘lad culture’. Approaches to highlighting the problem and reducing violence on campus are then considered, focusing on the ‘It Happens Here’ campaigns and Bystander Intervention programmes.
