ABSTRACT
THE FIRST WIDELY PUBLICIZED case of exoneration for murder in the United States involved the 1819 conviction and sentencing to death of two brothers, Jesse and Stephen Boorn, in Vermont for the murder of their brother-in-law, a fellow farmhand named Russell Colvin-even though Colvin’s body had not been found at the time of the trial.1
