ABSTRACT

I remembered the day a well-dressed young African American man came into my office. He needed a lawyer for a serious criminal matter. A highschool graduate and a tradesman, he had never been in trouble with the law. Yet, he had been indicted for felonious assault in the shooting of a parking lot attendant in a bungled burglary attempt. The bullet hit the attendant in the leg and caused him pain, loss of work, and a long period of rehabilitation.
