ABSTRACT

As was demonstrated in Chapter one, there is great variability in English language learning classrooms. However, with a growing number of countries requiring English language classes, a large proportion of EIL classrooms are primary and secondary public school classes. In this chapter, we will examine three common misconceptions regarding English classes in such contexts. They are the following:

Misconception #1: Local bilingual teachers of English are not and never can be as effective as native speakers of English.

Misconception #2: Students in EFL classes have little motivation to study English.

Misconception #3: An English-only EIL class is the most effective.
