ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we will examine the complexity of teaching and assessing grammar in EIL contexts. To begin, we will explore the diversity of form in current English use. We will highlight the manner in which this diversity is a factor not only of geographical region but also of the users (e.g., their educational and economic background) and the uses of English (e.g., spoken versus written English). Given this diversity, we will explore what this means for both teaching and assessing grammar in EIL classrooms.
