ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6, I discussed many of the conceptual issues and prerequisite materials that are involved in achieving an understanding of the manner in which individual neuronal responses represent or encode psychological functions. In this chapter I concentrate on the actual data base that has been obtained from extensive laboratory investigations in this area. I also delve deeper into the extremely perplexing question of whether or not the activity of single neurons or classes of neurons is detectable in a direct and simple way in the molar behavior of the organism.
