ABSTRACT

The relationship between education and health has received considerable research attention in recent years. Education is a form of socialization, which takes place through a variety of social institutions, such as schools, colleges and universities. What distinguishes education from other forms of socialization is an intention to transform people's understanding of the world and thus enhance their capacity to act upon it as rational, self-governing individuals. Contemporary views of education tend to emphasize the preparation of young people for adult life in their society. The protective effect of education is particularly well illustrated by an analysis of adult mortality in the Russian Federation during the social and political upheavals of the 1990's. The Marmot Review placed particular emphasis on education as a determinant of health. It made a number of recommendations relating to improving the quality of education, particularly in the early years, and especially through supporting parents as the primary agents of children's socialization.
