ABSTRACT

A group shot includes three or more characters in the frame; because of this, they tend to be composed with medium shots, medium long shots, and long shots, since these shot sizes are wide enough to showcase multiple subjects and some of their surrounding area. Group shots are commonly placed at the beginning of scenes to establish where everyone is situated within a space, so that when tighter shots are used afterwards, their spatial relationships are understood. Group shots often show everyone in the frame in sharp focus, even when subjects are placed far apart from each other along the z-axis of the frame.
