ABSTRACT

Abstract shots emphasize basic visual characteristics, such as colors, textures, patterns, shapes, lines, and their overall arrangement within the frame, over the literal content of a traditional subject. Sometimes, abstract shots feature subjects that are partially recognizable but are otherwise distorted or abstractly presented, resulting in images that are simultaneously familiar and foreign; this approach is often accomplished by isolating a visual detail in a way that makes it difficult to identify, generating a sense of ambiguity and tension in a scene. The duration and placement of an abstract shot should, however, be considered carefully, since they tend to bring a stop to the conventional flow of a narrative. Abstract shots can be created with a wide variety of techniques and tools, including filters, lighting effects, physical modeling, and digital plugins applied during the postproduction stage, among others.
