ABSTRACT

Medium shots include one or more characters from the waist up along with a sizable portion of their surrounding area. They are tighter than a medium long shot, but wider than a medium close-up, which provides just enough room in the frame to showcase a character’s body language while still being close enough to underline nuances of behavior and emotion through facial expressions. The wider perspective of medium shots also allows a character’s costume to provide expository information about their personality, social status, and other character traits. Medium shots are also very useful as transitional shots between wider, more visually expository shots, and tighter, more intimate shots, allowing us to gradually increase or decrease audience involvement within a scene.
