ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the basic features available within most learning management systems (LMSs). The names of the tools/features may vary across LMSs. Teacher announcements are usually the first thing students see when entering an online course within an LMS. Announcements can also be emailed to students. Online lessons contain the equivalent of the lectures, discussions, and activities that may take place in an on-site classroom. Students go to the discussion forums to participate in the online class discussion. Communication between participants begins when someone, usually the moderator, posts a topic or question for discussion. To submit assignments, the teacher may require the students to upload or share their work through the assignments feature of the LMS. The teacher uses the online grade book to communicate grades and feedback to learners. In an online course, digital course readings and references are organized in a section commonly referred to as “resources.”
