ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the basic pitfalls to avoid and techniques to embrace when writing for readers' online class. It provides a section on writing instructions for activities and course announcements. People learn better when the words of a multimedia presentation are in conversational style rather than formal style. The areas where clarity is most crucial are labeling and instructions—the elements that guide users through the functions of a page. In an online course, the primary method for communicating with learners about expectations is through writing. In the global world of online education, there will be many nonnative speakers of English listening to the spoken language in online courses and presentations. Using clear, concise writing models an accessible style that learners might emulate. Jargon, unlike technical terms, can be replaced by standard English words and phrases. Ideally, learners feel comfortable and motivated when they are in the online environment.
