ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors look at the qualities of engaged learning in more detail as they move through the development of the components that make up an online course. When following a purely textual model, online study emphasizes only linguistic intelligence. Online learning can be a rather solitary experience, perhaps appealing to the intrapersonal learner. Planning for collaboration and active learning, and incorporating outside resources, addresses interpersonal and kinesthetic learning. Online course activities are more engaging when both teacher and learner participate in the learning process. However, the actual engagement happens as students and teachers participate in the online course together. Pairing learners is a form of grouping, where the exchanges between two learners are more productive than they would be in a larger group setting. Communication and collaboration with others support active, engaged learning and community. Collaboration encourages the sharing of information and perspectives, and requires both independent responsibility and cooperation.
