ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the important elements of assessment and feedback, with specific considerations for online courses. Performance is measured through the products of the learner’s work. Products may include papers, assignments, tests, quizzes, digital presentations, and projects. Good teacher feedback on assessments promotes and improves learning. Feedback from the teacher should be continual, with regular opportunities for assessment of the learner’s work. Feedback can also come from peers and class guests who have expertise in the course’s content. When requiring students to provide feedback to others on their work, set up the criteria for evaluation. Most Learning management systems (LMSs) are equipped with a tool to design online self-tests, quizzes, or exams with instantaneous feedback. Feedback can be automated for multiple-choice tests, quizzes, and practice exercises in the LMS. This feedback can be given instantaneously or after learners complete the assessment.
