ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the overview of values education and teaching controversial issues in school geography which then serves as a backdrop for subsequent discussions about key educational themes: environmental geographies and education for sustainable development. Michael McPartland classifies the values which underpin the study of geography into: social values, economic values, environmental values, aesthetic values, political values and moral values. The teaching strategies that can be used in values education range from individual reflection and writing to group discussion, role playing, and structured analysis of situations where there is conflict. Values clarification helps pupils to use both rational thinking and emotional awareness to examine their personal feelings, values and behaviour patterns. By the 1990s, in response to global debates about planetary management, education for sustainable development came onto the education policy radar.
