ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a narrative of Yogita Naruka who is a research scholar in Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, India. She tells about her experiences in education as the springboard to her journey through social work education. She describes the development of the profession in India mostly in response to industrialization and ongoing inequalities in society. The transition from graduation to post-graduation was rather smooth for Yogita compared to those of her friends who entered social work after their graduation in non-social science disciplines. Working with communities and marginalized groups in urban as well as rural areas and engaging with problems arising out of poverty, inequalities and breakdown of social relations and community life were the initial thrust areas of social work practice in India. The tradition still holds much value and communities in urban areas like slum communities are vital social work practice territories.
