ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book provides all the encouragement needed to set up one's own outdoor toddler group, whether as an interested parent or a childcare professional. It presents simple, creative activities that young children can participate in and enjoy based on the Forest School ethos. The book dispels two pernicious myths about outdoor learning for children. The first is that outdoor toddler groups are things that happen on the posh side of town, in acres of beautiful outdoor space filled with trees and wooden play equipment that starts with a yard with patch of grass, some cheap resources and some enthusiastic play leaders. The second is that playing outdoors is inherently dangerous. Some of the risks are different to playing inside, but with sensible planning these can be minimized. The outdoor environment provides a wealth of sensory stimulation and adventure for children that cannot be hoping to replicate indoors.
