ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the children who are benefited from experiencing the outdoors throughout the year. The climate brings them plenty of sunshine, but also rain, wind and snow. Dressing appropriately for the weather is a key to run a good group. The carers keeping themselves warm and dry, or cool and well hydrated, is important because they will be on site before the children arrive and still there tidying up after they leave. This depends on whether they are operating as part of an existing childcare setting in which case they will be subject to their rules and regulations or running their own group. This will ensure that they have assessed the site itself for risks, and also included generic activities which they carry out on a regular basis, such as playing hide-and-seek or gathering and using natural materials in which the carers have fences or hedges containing the site on most sides.
