ABSTRACT

In previous chapters we explored how children’s literacy development can be enhanced and supported in the context of Early Years settings. Research shows that parental involvement in their children’s early literacy experiences is key to children’s later social and academic success. Early Years settings have an important role to play in creating respectful relationships with families and in supporting parents’ confidence and understanding of their role as early educators (Siraj-Blatchford et al., 2011). In this chapter we consider the literacy experiences that take place in the first few years at home, creating the conditions that allow children to learn to read and write. We explore ways to establish a strong partnership between Early Years settings and parents that take account of all children’s home cultures and experiences. Finally, we look at some practical ways to create a partnership with parents that builds on their strengths as educators at home, allowing young children to take more from their pre-school experience.
