ABSTRACT

Research articles typically follow a standard format for presentation in research journals. This chapter describes what a typical research study looks like with a brief explanation of each component. It discusses the first three parts of the research study: title, abstract, and introduction. Titles either attract potential readers or dissuade them from reading the article. A well-written title should give enough information to inform the consumer what the study is about. The abstract in a research article is written by the author(s) of the study. This is not always the case with the abstract written in preliminary sources, such as ERIC or another database. Typically, the introduction should provide historical context to the issue being investigated and bring in any theory that may be relevant to the reader. The research design subsection explains the overall structural design used in the study. There are a number of designs available, and each one has its appropriate use.
