ABSTRACT

Fortunately for students of Donne, two annotated bibliographies of criticism save labor and time. John R. Robertss John Donne: An Annotated Bibliography of Modern Criticism, 19121967 (1973) and his John Donne: An Annotated Bibliography of Modern Criticism, 19681978 (1982) cover virtually every book, article, and essay of significance published on Donne between 1912 and 1978. For even more comprehensive research that calls for the use of early editions and manuscripts, further tools are necessary. However, if one wishes or needs to consult earlier books, articles, essays, and comments about Donne and his works, other reference tools provide the essentials. If a person needs information on extant manuscripts of Donnes works, the primary reference tool is the Index of English Literary Manuscripts, compiled by Peter Beal and others. The researcher in Donne will be helped by a forthcoming work. The study of Donne's poetry should thereby be simplified, saving time for the researcher while increasing his accuracy.
