ABSTRACT

This chapter explains Environmental modelling, Statutory contaminated land assessment, Noise nuisance prediction using BS4142, The three basic stages of BS4142, planning guidance relating to noise nuisance, FIDOL factors determining the offensiveness of a particular odour and ecotoxicity assessments and the use of indicator species. Biological indicator species are selected to be representative of pollution impacts to their ecosystem. Different indicator species may be required depending on the primary pollution pathway, as well as the specific ecosystem or pollutant characteristics. This is only really useful in cases of acute pollution, e.g. emergency planning. This chapter provides general overview of pollution control techniques and emergency planning, materials and waste management to reduce environmental impact, effluent treatment techniques in both public main sewer and industrial pre-treatment plants and control approaches for noise, odour and dust nuisance. It is the essential guide for students who preparing for the IEMA Associate Membership Exam and NEBOSH Diploma in Environmental Management.
