ABSTRACT

As a child, my interest was captured by the soukhouan celebration that took place in various homes to mark special events in the community. I particularly remember the more elaborate events, where people dressed in their fi nest clothing. The women were especially beautiful in their traditional, brightly colored Lao silk skirts and scarves, their hair put up in buns and pinned with jewels. There was always plenty of laughter, socializing, and food. The tables were fi lled and refi lled with amazing Lao dishes. The celebrations often continued late into the night, and the children would inevitably fall asleep before the revelry ended. I never questioned the ceremonies that were hosted in our home or in the homes of others in our community, simply accepting them as part of our Lao cultural tradition. What did stand out in my mind was the feeling of acceptance, community, and friendship at these celebrations.
