ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the reader with a description of risk and protective factors that may contribute to engagement in sexual risk behaviors. It outlines community, family, and peer risk/protective factors followed by recommended strategies and activities in which preventionists/interventionists can engage in to support sexual health. An adolescent's connection to the community and neighbourhood has been examined as a potential protective factor in reducing the likelihood of health risk behavior, including substance abuse/use and high-risk sexual behaviors. Lack of school connectedness is a risk factor associated with sexual risk behaviors. Peer factors for adolescent sexual risk behaviors include associating with deviant peers. The school-based and/or community-based mental health professionals should be available to health educators. Mental health professionals should be in a position to consult with health educators and others in the classroom might not be in a position to identify and respond to the signs of trauma.
