ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the sexual health among youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA). It then explores the sexual risk behaviors and sexual health education needs of LGBTQIA youth who may differ from heterosexual youth and it provides an information regarding the needs of LGBTQ youth. Youth who identify as intersex or asexual may have other needs that are outside the scope of chapter's discussion, particularly because of the lack of current research regarding sexual health of these populations. Like lesbians, gay men have their own sexual behaviors, sexual practices, and risk behaviors, and they experience a high rate of negative sexual health outcomes. This includes sexually transmitted infections (STIs) for which effective treatments are available and for which no cure is currently available. A major concern for gay men's health is HIV/AIDS. Finally, the chapter also provides an overview of LGBTQIA terminology, and specific topics of importance in promoting sexual health.
