ABSTRACT

A language is any set of symbols that stand for or refer to objects or relationships. The set of symbols must have basic symbols that can combine by rules into combinations of symbols. There are syntactic rules in each language in terms of which words can combine into acceptable phrases and phrases into clauses and sentences. Academics sometimes use the word "text" to mean any stretch or body of written language. Non-real worlds like, mythology, science fiction, religion, and baseball, are treated as having basic units and combinations of basic units. These basic units and their combinations are assigned meaning within the mythological universe of discourse. Players read the game world. Indeed, if they cannot, they cannot play the game. If they cannot read it well, they cannot win the game. Since a game world is visual, at one level it has the same grammar as the real world.
