ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the UK Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) project entitled Hidden Lives based on key area of the city of Gloucester in the southwest of England. It draws funded community projects in the UK and in Latin America and explores the social histories and memories of ethnic and cultural minorities. With its decades of experience in collecting memories of minorities, migration and settlement, the Museu da Pessoa has worked with the leaderships of the rural women's network to empower their movement through their own memory work. The focus for the project was the social history and experiences of individuals within minority ethnic communities of parts of the UK that had seen a rapid rise in immigration but also had a long history of multicultural settlement. More recently, the UK had seen a significant influx of Eastern and Southern European peoples following the admission of a number of underdeveloped countries to the European Union.
