ABSTRACT

The new generation of students are increasingly digital natives and come to college campuses expecting to experience significant portions of their learning through digital platforms. And, as people have seen, experiential education can easily happen through digital platforms. Simulations, game-based learning, and e-portfolios, for example, all support experiential learning in significant ways. The point, for bricks-and-mortar campuses, is to figure out a hybrid model-one that differentiates and discovers the best of both worlds-where to invest in and encourage online learning and where to invest in and encourage in-person learning. The pervasiveness of digital technology has created a similar trend, in the authors view, in education-learning alone. It is incredibly easy today to learn something by yourself through online means. That should be celebrated, but among the celebration, people should not forget that all this learning is still learning alone. And civic society requires more than learning alone.
