ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a series of steps for completing a corpus project. Sometimes researchers need to build their own corpora. Corpus building not only allows answering a specific research question, but it also gives an experience in corpus construction. Corpus research projects take a good deal of time commitment to complete. A worthy research project has a number of different components, including providing a motivation of the significance of the topic, a clear description of the corpus and the methods used in the study to analyze the results, and the presentation of the results. After deciding on the corpus project, the next step is to build a relevant corpus so that the corpus techniques can be used to identify relevant linguistic features for further analysis. The chapter focuses on two software programs that are useful for corpus linguistic analyses: AntWordProfiler for lexical analyses and AntConc for lexical as well as grammatical analyses.
