ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The transition from primary to secondary school is extremely important in the lives of children and young people but it is also a time of significant stress for some, and research shows that the continuity of the curriculum between these phases of schooling may suffer during this period. The researchers also identified three key indicators used to ensure that children's transitions were successful and improved when necessary. The first was that of social adjustments. The second key factor appears to be that of institutional adjustment. The third key factor was that of curriculum interest and continuity. Policy documents are written and produced but these are also seen as being implemented that is the policy is modelled in practice for all members of the school community. Psychologists have long recognised that some children develop well despite growing up in high risk environments.
