ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the programme of the students that are asked to engage in a range of positive activities which focus upon further identifying their strengths, and setting positive and realistic goals for the future. Many of the activities are drawn from solution focused brief therapy approaches which encourage individuals to consider how positive change can be brought about via the principles of solution building as opposed to problem solving. Solution focused brief therapy approaches and strategies are extremely useful when used with young people, in the sense that they can help to develop their sense of personal agency and responsibility. The students are asked to consider what they've learnt about themselves: their learning styles, character strengths, self-management skills, resilience and positive thinking skills. One of the key skills that students need to develop in order to effectively make the transition, and also to effectively remain positive within their daily lives, is to show 'true grit'.
