ABSTRACT

The transition from primary to secondary school is extremely important in the lives of children and young people but it is also a time of significant stress for some, and research shows that the continuity of the curriculum between these phases of schooling may suffer during this period. Risk factors will be highlighted in order to support preventative work and ensure the inclusion and effective transition of all children. The student programme encourages the learning of seven skills of resilience and presents young people with a range of strategies and tools to develop a resilient way of thinking. The programme itself also makes use of solution focused approaches, motivational interviewing techniques and ideas, cognitive behaviour therapy strategies and techniques and a range of ideas and techniques taken from positive psychology and resilience theory. The activity sheets are self-explanatory and frequently require self-reflection and assessment of skills and self-knowledge.
