ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 provides an introduction to the development of anthropology in disaster. The importance of network is presented in this chapter, which aims to contribute to an understanding of conditions for resilience building. The chapter provides a brief overview of how the contested concept of resilience has developed. It deals with social capital's positive and negative sides and also with the interplay between gender, vulnerability and social resilience. It introduces religion as a factor in developing resilience among people who have experienced a life-threatening disaster.
