ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 describes the activities and the work that was carried out at the temples after the tsunami and deals especially with the first month after the catastrophe, when temples were the main sites for the identification of dead bodies, work-places for forensic specialists and sanctuary for many thousands of survivors. The chapter provides a brief outline of the daily routines and ordinary life at the temples and explains the relationship between monks, nuns and the laity. Gender and Buddhism is addressed and explores how the Thai Buddhist nuns could assist the survivors after the disaster.
