ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 concentrates on the material support that was supplied through donations, compensation from NGOs and the Thai government, and on how the survivors experienced the relief situation. Local and international NGOs played a pivotal role in the relief operation. This chapter has found that coordination, proper planning of aid contributions, and the screening of distressed people are extremely important in order to avoid adding to people's suffering. It investigates both good examples of this as well as the criticisms raised by local people and civil society groups. The chapter discusses the consequences of faith-based organizations’ conversion of Buddhists to Christianity in exchange for aid.
