ABSTRACT

This chapter examines range of alternative research methods and criteria for their use in broad terms. A range of major methods used in sport research, including the roles of scholarship. Approaches and techniques which are subsidiary to one or more of the major methods, in that they are a variation on or an application of the major method or cut across a number of the major methods. The chapter describes that the research involves being well informed about the field and thinking about the problems and issues being researched in theoretical and practical terms. It introduces a number of approaches and techniques which are subsidiary to one or more of the major methods, in that they are a variation on, or an application of, the major method, or cut across a number of the major methods. The chapter discusses the concept of triangulation, counting heads and mixed methods.
